Analysis of Driver Behaviour and Collision Risks for Protected Freeway Entrance and Exit Ramps: Trajectories and Surrogate Safety Measures

چکیده

ENGLISH) This study presents a surrogate approach for safety analysis of freeway facilities using semiautomated trajectory collection and behavioural analysis from surrogate measures of safety (in particular time to collision). This methodology is proposed as a potential alternative to the classical approach based on historical accident data, particularly suited for evaluating the microscopic safety effects of highway treatments for which there is a lack of traffic and accident data. The proposed methodology is illustrated using as a small sample of freeway ramps from which videos where available as part of a safety study on one-way lane-change closures near urban freeway entrances and exits. Various methods of aggregating the data, spatially and temporally, are explored for road safety analysis.

A Surrogate Safety Analysis at Protected Freeway Ramps Using Cross- Sectional and Before-After Video Data

This study presents a surrogate approach for safety analysis of freeway facilities using automated trajectory collection and behavioural analysis from surrogate measures of safety (in particular time to collision). This methodology is proposed as a potential alternative or complement to the classical approach based on historical accident data, particularly suited for evaluating the microscopic ...

Comparing Methods of Ramp Metering for On-Ramps to Improve the Operational Conditions at Peak Hours

This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of different methods of ramp metering on the operational conditions of traffic flow at three levels: the network level (including the freeway and its connected ramps), the entrance ramp, and the upstream segment of the entrance. To achieve this aim, one of the most important urban freeways in the metropolis of Isfahan was selected. The traffic...

Proactive Safety Assessment in Roadwork Zones: a Synthesis of Surrogate Measures of Safety

Work zone safety studies have traditionally relied on historical crash records—an approach which is reactive in nature as it requires crashes to accumulate first before taking any preventive actions. However, detailed and accurate data on work zone crashes are often not available, as is the case for Australian road work zones. The lack of reliable safety records and the reactive nature of the c...

Comparative Assessment of Safety Indicators for Vehicle Trajectories on Highways

Safety measurement and its analysis has been a challenging and well-researched topic in transportation. Conventionally, surrogate safety measures have been used as safety indicators in simulation models for safety assessment, in control formulations for driver assistance systems, and in data analysis of naturalistic driving studies. However, surrogate indicators give partial insights on traffic...

Optimal Freeway Ramp Control without Origin- Destination Information

This paper develops an analytical framework for ramp metering, under which various ramp control strategies can be viewed as ramifications of the same most-efficient control logic with different threshold values, control methods, and equity considerations. The most-efficient control logic only meters the entrance ramps nearest critical freeway mainline sections so as to eliminate freeway interna...
